Corby Silver Band appear in Plusnet Advert

One of the most interesting bookings we have taken this year was by the company that produce the adverts for the broadband provider - Plusnet.

We were asked to provide eight members of the band who would be filmed at Rockingham Speedway racetrack as part of their advert titled 'Days of Fibre'.  A copy of the advert can be found on Youtube .

The second part of the advert which is still currently being shown, shows the members of the band, who spent a considerable amount of time in the make-up department in order to be completely whitened out. You need to watch the advert to see why. The advert can be viewed on Plusnet's Facebook page.

Summer concerts

Our summer season of engagements is now coming to a close.  Highlights included the two performances where the band played at Corby's new theatre -The Core, where we were asked to play as part of an amateur production about the history of Corby.

Once again we entertained an enthusiastic audience at Lyveden New Beild.  This is always one of the band's favourite engagements.

We also performed in our usual variety of open air concerts, some in glorious sunshine and some not so glorious.  Luckily only one event had to be abruptly ended due to the weather.

It was lovely to see some of the members of our training band, who have recently moved into the senior band, playing in their first few concerts with the senior band, proudly contributing to our happy team.

Jubilee celebration concerts

The band has been very busy throughout June and early July.  Our performance at the Jubilee Party held at St. Michael's Church in Kettering was very well received with the organisers commenting on our cheery selection of music - which had many of the audience tapping their feet and in some cases singng, along to.
We have also performed at engagements in Harringworth, Geddington and most recently in Brigstock. More about these engagements later.......

We are steadily working our way through our summer diary of concerts.

As usual the great British weather is showing it's true form, as unfortunately one of our performances was cancelled due to the poor weather.

The other two concerts so far have been great successes.  Although the weather during the first of these concerts was extremely cold, windy and wet, we still managed to hold on to our music and play a selection of cheery pieces to entertain the audience.  Our committment and efforts were rewarded by the organisers and audience who commented on how much they had enjoyed our performance.

We received a great reception during our most recent performance on our home ground at the Jubilee celebrations in Coronation Park, Corby.  A massive 'Thank You' to Oliver Newton for conducting.  We entertained a large crowd who listened to the music as they sat bathed in glorious sunshine.

David Wright - BBb bass player

It is with great sadness that we report the death of one of our former players - David Wright.

David, or Jed to those who knew and loved him, was a well respected and very talented musician who bravely continued to play with the band right up until Christmas, even though his health was starting to suffer.

Jed was one of the longest serving members of the band, mostly playing Bb bass, although he occasionally opted for the much lighter choice playing the 3rd cornet parts.  Jed always gave 100% committment to Corby Silver Band, including having several positions on the band committee.

He had great enthusiasm and was always extremely entertaining.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this sad time.

On 26th March, members of both Corby Silver and Gretton Silver bands, stood proudly to make a guard of honour at the funeral service for our former BBb bass player David Wright (Jed).

After the service, Jed's family and friends went back to the Corby Silver Band club, where members of Corby Silver Band, along with  guests from Gretton band, performed a short concert.

Thank you to Clare, Pat, Wayne and Pete, from Gretton band for their support in this very emotional performance.

Boobs & Brass

On 25th October, two of our members - Michelle Beeby (cornet) and Amanda Beale (baritone), who are members of the all girl band 'Boobs and Brass', travelled to Huddersfield to share the stage with one of the country's most famous championship section bands - Brighouse and Rastrick.

Boobs and Brass were the special guests of the all male band and played to a full house at the Hudderfield Town Hall.

The evening started with the two bands sharing the stage for the opening march, overture and a few other pieces (all coincidently featuring girls names in the title), before the boys vacated the stage to allow the girls to shine in the limelight.

The second half opened with Brighouse and Rastrick band showing their musical talents, which included a fantastic and very entertaining performance of 'Mr Sandman', before welcoming the girls back on to the stage to play the finishing pieces - including .... yes, 'The Floral Dance'.  Wow what a moment that was!!!

It has to be said it took quite a while for the girls to come back down to earth, and the girls are looking forward to the return concert when they will be inviting the boys over to Northamptonshire for a concert at the Lighthouse Theatre in Kettering in November 2009.

Christmas fundraising

Well done to the members of the band, who put gloves, hats and extra pairs of socks on, to brave the weather and take part in our carolling sessions.

Our indoor and outdoor concerts and carolling has helped us raise some much needed funds for the band.  So a massive 'Thank You' to all those who took part.

Christmas performances and festivities

Well, we have now reached the end of our Christmas engagements for 2011.  Highlights included playing at the Lakelands Hospice "Light up a life" service and as usual we had a lot of fun at the two Christmas dinners held at the Corby Silver Band club, for club members.  We also played at a new venue this year, playing at Mocha Mamas in Kettering, and as usual we entertained shoppers at ASDA in Corby, and Morrisons in both Corby and Kettering.

At our Christmas social night, it was lovely to see some of the invited guest players who have helped out during the year and the families of our regular members came along to join in with the celebrations.
